April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and annually the Orange County Rape Crisis Center offers a variety of events and activities designed to raise awareness about this pervasive problem. SAAM efforts include fundraisers with local restaurants and businesses, displays of the agency?s Clothesline Project, dissemination of teal ribbons and information cards, yoga workshops, participation in Denim Day and the Hablando Lo Prohibido/Speaking the Forbidden conference. The Center also annually hosts the Shout Out Against Sexual Violence, an expressionistic evening of personal thoughts, opinions and experiences surrounding the issues of rape and sexual violence.

Paint the Town Teal a Success!

During SAAM 2010, the Center partnered with local businesses throughout Orange County on a project called "Paint the Town Teal." Participating businesses posted a teal ribbon and informational card in a visible location on their premises. Many added a fundraising component to their participation, donating proceeds of sales to the Center for an agreed upon time period throughout the month.

By working together and pooling our resources during the month of April, the Center raised over $1,500 and was able to highlight sexual violence as a major public health issue, reinforcing the need for prevention efforts. Thank you to the many businesses and community partners that supporting Paint the Town Teal and our SAAM 2010 efforts!
