Sexual Assault Awareness Month ~ April 2010

April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and we are using the whole month to speak out about sexual violence in our community. We are hosting different events all month long including a kick-off concert and a movement workshop. We are proud to present our annual Shout Out! on April 26th and the Spanish language "Speaking the Forbidden" Conference on April 10th at United Church of Chapel Hill. This year we are also pairing with local businesses to raise awareness through a Paint the Town Teal campaign and the Clothesline Project.

If you want to get involved, we are always looking for volunteers to take the lead on projects or to help out with events. If you are interested please contact Rachel@ocrcc.org or attend our interest meeting on January 21st from 4 to 5 at Caribou Coffee (the one on the corner of Estes and Franklin).

Keep checking this site for more information as we get closer to SAAM.

Speak Out! It's your chance to be heard and to witness! Poetry, personal narratives, creative writings, spoken word, performance art, visual art, etc...

The Orange County Rape Crisis Center will host the 8th Annual Shout Out Against Sexual Violence on Monday, April 26th. This event, annually hosted during Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April, is an evening of expression including personal thoughts, opinions, and experiences surrounding the issues of rape and sexual assault. Survivors of sexual violence and those who care about them will have the opportunity to read works and perform pieces related to the impact of sexual violence. There will be a period for open mic following the submitted program pieces as time allows.

If you would like to submit a piece to the Shout Out, please email Krista Park Berry at krista@ocrcc.org or call 919-968-4647 for more information. Please indicate whether you will present this piece at the Shout Out or if you would like a staff member or volunteer to present it as an anonymous submission. Submission deadline: Monday, April 19th.

22nd Annual Holiday Auction

Presented by SPORTS ENDEAVORS

The 22nd Annual Holiday Auction was a big success for the Center, bringing in over $65,000 to help fund Center services. The auction brought out the Center's most dedicated supporters; the Center's founder, Miriam Slifkin was present as well as Gerrie Nunn, the founder of our Holiday Auction. We would like to thank everyone who attended, volunteered, staffed, sponsored and donated to the Holiday Auction. We would especially like to give a special thank you to Sports Endeavors for being a Leadership Sponsor for the event. The communities continued support allows us to provide necessary crisis intervention and educational programming throughout Orange County. The event boasted almost 300 items to choose from donated by 170 local businesses and individuals and over 200 guests. During the evening the Center highlighted our Latina/o services program and after a moving presentation of the importance of culturally competent services attendees donated $2,000 to help continue our very successful efforts of outreach and crisis response services for the Spanish-speaking population. The Center is appreciative of everyone who continues to make this event successful and we look forward to seeing you all next year.

WCHL Presented the center with a Village Pride Award for its work on the auction and in the community. Listen to a new interview with Lucy McMillan and Shamecca Bryant:

Thank you to our top event sponsors:

A Foodie's Midsummer Dream

Mushroom panzanella with truffle scallion oil and bamboo shoots and bison kefta kebabs with mint yogurt and cilantro chutney were just two of the many delectable dishes that were served on July 18th  at "A Foodie's Midsummer Dream," an evening of tasting and fellowship benefitting the Orange County Rape Crisis Center.  Organized by Board of Directors members Valarie Schwartz, Lucy McMillan and Richard Kwok and hosted by Esteban and Dana McMahan, the evening raised over $2,000 for the Rape Crisis Center.  Many of the dishes featured local ingredients donated by farmers from local farmers markets.  A wonderful time was had by the many friends of the Rape Crisis Center as they enjoyed the culinary skills of Chef Jonathon Schwartz, the talented son of board member Valarie Schwartz.  Thanks to everyone involved for such a lovely evening.

Want to host a barbecue, party or small event benefitting the Rape Crisis Center?  Contact Shamecca Bryant, development director at Shamecca@ocrcc.org or (919) 968-4647.
